Rich Crandall Recall

June 21, 2010

A recall effort is underway to remove District 19 Rep. Rich Crandall from office.  His absence from voting in 2009 seems to be the main reason for the recall.  Several articles have been written on the recall:

These and other articles indicate that the recall effort is meant to send a message to Mr. Crandall and other State Representatives rather than actually recall anyone.  The public is enraged, almost in frenzy mode, over recent government waste and elected officials who are flippant about their most basic responsibilities “to represent” their constituents.

It has become abundantly clear that, at least in Rich Crandall’s case, his main concern and focus is not representing his district. His main driving passion and concern is his pocket book.  He has used his position on the school board and legislature to further his career and business dealings, which has frustrated many in legislative district 19.  “If he would at least show up to vote on every bill, instead of being absent over half the time, maybe we could give him a little slack,” said an upset LD19 citizen. “We need our voices heard in the halls of the State Legislature, and Mr. Crandall’s absence is a slap in our face.”

Working class tax payers are so overwhelmed with the current system and the burdens being placed upon them that change is absolutely needed.  The Tea Party crowd is a good example of this movement.

The coming statewide elections should be a good indicator of how unhappy voters have really become over these issues.  Rich Crandall is running for the LD19 Senate seat being vacated by current state Senator Chuck Gray who is not running for re-election.  Mr. Crandall originally thought he would run unopposed, but has discovered that James Molina, a popular East Valley conservative, has been encourage to run against Rich to give LD19 citizens a real alternative to Mr. Crandall’s liberal leanings.  The following comparison sheet is a good side-by-side of the two candidates running for the District 19 Senate seat.

Representative Rich Crandall from Mesa, AZ is currently serving in the House of Representatives for district 19.  He is a self proclaimed Republican, but many in his party are shaking their heads at his track record which shows a very liberal leaning.  Those who know him best indicate his actions reflect the need to work with both sides of the isle - but when reaching across the isle includes fund raising for liberals and Democrats - conservatives say “enough is enough.”

Crandall who has been viewed as an educrat Republican with a less than spectacular voting record is not held in favor amongst many conservatives in the district. Some would even say that he has burned too many bridges with the party faithful.

Meanwhile, conservative activists are actively seeking another candidate to deny Crandall an easy slide into Chuck Gray’s seat. A Crandall win would symbolize a weakening of the party and lack of fiscal discipline.

Recent news articles show how “out-of-touch” Rep. Crandall has become. We highlight several 2010 newspaper stories:

and the list goes on and on and on…….

Crandall’s motioning to walk into Gray’s Senate seat is leading some conservatives to recruit a more conservative alternative. One name being mentioned is long time East Valley Conservative James Molina. Mr. Molina is a true Constitutional Conservative who believes “the Constitution is the repository for correct principles and doctrines for the proper role of government. All proposed legislation should be scrutinized against the back-drop of the Constitution.”

The conservative base in LD19 has good reason to be concerned about Crandall in the Senate, where he would have at least twice as much influence as he has in the House. He has been heard recently saying he “wants to be the next Carolyn Allen.”He is referring to her ability to hold the caucus hostage for her vote, thereby extracting a disproportionate number of concessions to her personal agenda, not necessarily her specific ideology. However, with a reasonably conservative Senate membership, the issue positions drive the power. Crandall has to be willing to block conservative policies, and the other Senators have to believe he will, before the power to demand his personal priorities be addressed will materialize.
